Regarding Mongol titles (follow-on to discussion arising from thanks message of new Prince (Emir) of Lochac). Attn: David H - I have looked at the Great Dark Horde website - which seems to clearly confirm their status as only a Household within the SCA. I was unable to find any documentation regarding reserved titles agreed upon with the SCA. There is reference to the leader of the GDH being referred to as KaKhan, and we can find this from the glossary of terms. Kagan (khaghan, khakhan) emperor From reading various writings about the Mongols it appears that Khan was in fact the equivalent to a Western Baron (especially prior to the uniting of the people, when each small or large tribe was lead by their own Khan), and that is partly why Genghis was referred to as Genghis Khan (a loose translation being Great Khan). As this became so directly linked to the great man, the term Khaghan was also used for the title of Great Khan or Khan above Khans following after Genghis (although many authors simply use the term Khan in their writings). Whilst the term Khan could be seen to be equivalent to Baron, historical and general misconception that Khan = King has meant that it would have been inappropriate to use the term in this fashion within the SCA context. Therefore, it is most likely that our new Prince will use the term Khan (or possibly Khaghan) when he assumes the Throne of Lochac in January. Please understand that within Lochac, this is a most appropriate usage as we have a history of Kings and Queens using equivalent titles from the cultural background of their Persona. Its part of the game we all enjoy. In this same fashion, I have taken the title Orlok (which most directly means General) in lieu of Baron and Master.
