Regarding rusty nails in the foot: Warning, Im being very detailed, dont read if squeamish! Put a nail right through the bottom of my right foot last summer, it was poised for the furthest outer edge of the metatarsal, but slid off to the side of the bone as it went in...could see it bumping up the skin on the top of my foot....damn did that hurt! I was moving wood pallets, most still in tact, most of them no nails sticking out... One had a nail that was pretty invisible due to being rusted so much it looked like a dirty wood splinter. Thanks to one board snagging on another, I lost my balance, and everything went into slow motion; I knew every step and move Id be making, and all results would end this just-now-visible nail going into some part of me. I opted for my foot, as I analyzed all options, and not only would it hurt the least, but if there was tetanus issues, it would then taken the longest to reach my vital organs! I felt it hesitate as it hit the callous, and then pierce through, hit the bone, then slide off, pulling muscle and tissue with it; it wasnt bleeding at that moment, and I didnt want to bleed everywhere, that Id then have to scrub off the floor/ground later.. I was by myself, so I had to rotate the board to make a T shape with my foot, and walk on my heel back to the bathroom (about 150 ft), sit on the toilet, foot and board over the garbage can, and pull the damn thing out, board still attached! It left a shard in the callous, so I hovered my foot over the garbage, hopped up to retrieve my Leatherman from my pocket and dug that little b**** out. Bled for about 3 minutes, on purpose, pushing around the opening to get everything I could out. Emergency tetanus shot from Wallgreens: $83 + professional administering = total $123 Bruised bone and swollen foot for 2 weeks, requiring a shoe on at all times that I wasnt at home. This was a first for me, and too damn right, the last!
