Regarding the Board of Regents appointments this week, I would - TopicsExpress

Regarding the Board of Regents appointments this week, I would like to thank Assemblyman Ra for taking the time to explain the election process more fully to our HVACC members yesterday. Attached, is the roll call. Here are his comments regarding the 3/11/14 election of the Regents: Edward Ra Ill try to shed some light on this, this isnt all that easy to follow. As you can see each candidate has their own page. On that page you will see either a check mark indicating the Assembly member or Senator voted for that candidate or an N next to those who voted no (meaning they voted for neither candidate for that position). As you will see there are people with nothing next to their name. If you compare the sheets for opposing candidates they will match up but the Ns are listed for both of them to make the neither vote more clear. For your reference again: 16 hours ago · Unlike · 4 Edward Ra At-large 1: Cottrell (Inc), Mikoda 16 hours ago · Like Edward Ra At-large 2: Norwood (Inc), Polka 16 hours ago · Unlike · 1 Edward Ra JD 3 (Capital Region): Finn (Assembly Majoritys nominee), Ford, Rose 16 hours ago · Unlike · 1 Edward Ra JD 13 (Staten Island): Cea (Inc.), Reilly 16 hours ago · Unlike · 1 Edward Ra So for example, if you look next to my name on Cottrells sheet theres nothing next to it but theres a check mark next to my name on Mikodas. And for someone who voted for Cottrell they have a check mark on his sheet but no mark on Mikodas. The neither or no votes have an N on all the sheets 16 hours ago · Unlike · 5 Edward Ra Many vote no because of the process which as you can see is dominated by the Assembly majority. All the need is a few senate Ds to vote with them and they can pass their nominees. The magic number is 107 regardless so No votes only hurt the incumbent or majoritys nominee. There actually usually arent multiple nominees but we found a way to nominate other candidates this year. The process as it is gives one party complete control of the vote. 8 hours ago · Like · 1 Edward Ra Even the floor nominations are not written in statute but rather a resolution passed to begin the session. So if the majority wanted to they could have reworded the resolution governing that joint session to prevent nominations from the floor. We would have not even known that to be the case until we convened the session. Please recall, the Regents are responsible for the general supervision of all educational activities within the State, presiding over The University and the New York State Education Department and the Board of Regents set policy that NYSED and all our school districts must follow.
