Regarding the #ScottishReferendum. 1) London and those British that favoured the NO can breathe easier tonight. However, they should realise that the polity that is the United Kingdom has changed forever. The vote forced an evolution from a unitary toward a federal state. London-centric politics and policies were questioned to its core. There is no compelling reason why citizens throughout the UK shouldnt rethink how the political system is arranged. The conversation is hardly over, it should be quite alive tonight and over the weekend throughout pubs in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Of course, Scotland will continue talking and wont stop until the full extent of devolved powers is granted. And then some... 2) A tally of 45% for the YES is hardly a failure. It is more a spectacular achievement. Considering the reactionary, fear-mongering riddled NO campaign. There is a considerable number of Scots that voted for independence and their aspirations need to be addressed by both, Holyrood and Westminster. They will –as well as the other 55%– expect the full extent of devolution. But more than that, Londons political establishment learned a hard lesson about not taking the Demos (the people, the electorate) for granted. As conglomerate, as collective they have the right to question the terms in which their polity is governed, and they will let politicians know about it in the harshest ways. Scottish men and women, young and old reminded London the old adage of Scottish kings: Nemo me impune lacessit (Nobody provokes me with impunity) Welcome to the new United Kingdom...
