Regarding the quick early release call: We apologize for the late weather call. The weather this morning was unusual in many ways. As of 8 am the local stations were still not reporting snow in our area until late afternoon and more likely late this evening. As the snow was falling in Rockingham County, The National Weather Center in Blacksburg (the weather center who reports for Rockingham County) was not showing we had any precipitation on the radar. It also takes about 20 minutes to call 20,000 numbers when we use the emergency Alert Now call list. This is why we post the information on our website, on facebook, on twitter and get the information in to the local newspapers and TV stations as soon as we can. The decision made today was made as it is each time. We look at road conditions and consult with DOT and the Sheriff’s Department; review the current weather conditions and the forecast. No one, including the National Weather Center was predicting this heavy of an early snow. Please know we always try to make the safest decision no matter what. The toughest decision we make during the school year is deciding whether to dearly, release or close school due to bad weather. Even with the best information available, there is always an unknown factor that may occur without warning. Thank you for your understanding and your continued support in Rockingham County Schools! Here is the early release information: **IMPORTANT EARLY RELEASE NOTICE** January 28: Elementary schools/SCORE will release @ 10:00 RECHS will release @ 10:15 Middle/High schools will release @10:45 All after-school activities have been canceled/postponed!
