Region 1 braces for Super Typhoon Yolanda By Joanne Namnama G. Parrocha SAN FERNANDO CITY, November 7 (PIA) – The state weather bureau advises the public to brace for storm Yolanda (international name Haiyan) that could intensify into a super typhoon before making landfall over the Visayas region on November 8,Friday. Cynthia Iglesia, chief of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Administration (PAGASA) in Ilocos Norte, however, said residents in the Ilocos region will not feel serious effects of Yolanda’s wrath. “Barriers in the region like buildings and mountains help in lessening the impact of the typhoon”, Iglesia said. Still, a gale warning has already been issued to Northern Luzons northern seaboard, caused by the Northeast Monsoon. Fishermen using small sea craft are advised to sail away from the northern seaboard as a precaution to ensure their safety at sea, Iglesia added. The Regional Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (RDRRMC-1) also prepares for any typhoon-related eventuality despite low possibilities of Yolanda to move closer to region 1. Director Melchito M. Castro, Office of the Civil Defense region 1 regional director and RDRRMC-1 chairperson, said he will initially make a memorandum addressed to RDRRMC member-agencies regarding reiteration of precautionary measures to aim for zero casualty. The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD-1) is also keeping tabs of the possible effects of weather disturbances. The agency has already prepositioned a total of 3,195 food packs which serve as standby relief items for possible delivery to affected families. Social Worker Loiue Acosta said their Quick Response Team will also be activated once a storm signal is raised in any province within the region. Yolanda is expected to arrive within the next 48 hours with a peak intensity of 241 kilometers per hour and forecasted to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on November 10, Sunday.
