Regional Medical Research Centre, Dibrugarh study on community control of hypertension Hypertension, a major contributor for cardiovascular diseases can be controlled to a great extent by adopting healthy diet and lifestyles. High prevalence of hypertension among tea garden workers of Assam is associated with specific dietary habit of taking high salt (>20 gm/day /individual) in the form of black tea with salt and salt as a side dish. The amount exceeds recommendation by Joint National Committee -7 i.e. 6 gm/day. Regional Medical Research Centre, NE Region (Indian Council of Medical Research, New Delhi) Dibrugarh, Assam, had carried out a community based study to reduce dietary salt intake and blood pressure in them. Intensive IEC activities in the form of counselling, educational posters, hoarding, leaflets, school campaigning, health rally and documentary show were carried out. During follow up, we observed complete abolition of habit of taking salt tea at the work place, reduction of salt consumption as a side dish (56.7% to 25.2%), mean systolic, diastolic blood pressure and prevalence of hypertension (52.4% to 39.3%).
