Regis University Library was well represented at the Building Bridges to Inclusion: 8th annual Diversity, Engagement and Inclusion Conference, held on the Regis University Lowell Campus, Nov. 5-7, 2014 “Picture Books Featuring People of Color” was presented by Brooke Guilfoyle (Regis University Library) and Mary Lawrence (CPS). Scholars, teachers, authors and parents have long been aware of the relative lack of picture books featuring people of color, and the impact this has on promoting diversity and early childhood literacy. The speakers introduced the issue, highlighted recent efforts to amend the situation, and presented an analysis of 2014 picture book titles featuring children of color. “Libraries: The Forgotten Piece in the Diversity Puzzle” presented by Rita A Puig (Regis University Learning Resource Center, Thornton Campus) and Jimena Sagas (Colorado State University Library). Although navigating libraries is a key component of academic success, librarians are rarely invited to guide or participate in discussions about academic achievement and diversity. Furthermore, while libraries function as a great equalizer, dialogues about diversity rarely include libraries as a tool towards inclusive excellence. Libraries are unique to campus identity because they integrate students both academically and socially; they have the potential to help close the academic success gap. In this session, Rita and Jimena demonstrated how libraries are a pillar on university campuses, contribute to academic success, and promote a campus climate for diversity. Thanks to all for participating in this important conference and stimulating the members of the audience.
