Regulation Anyone?- New York and Connecticut are two states that have laws that make professional mixed martial arts illegal. Close behind them are several other states, but their laws go beyond mixed martial arts and can affect all martial arts. Whenever someone mentions mixed martial arts people instantly think of the UFC. Well, there is good reason for that as it is a valuable sporting franchise that has trounced the NBA’s playoffs in ratings. About 40% of the viewing audience is female that places it ahead of a lot of other sports for that demographic. Not bad for a franchise that was purchased for two-million back in 2001. So what does this have to do with other martial arts? As some of you know LCMA also heads up an association for martial artists. To date there are three states that have passed laws that regulate martial arts. Illinois and Wyoming were the first and were followed by Michigan just last month. Washington State has a bill proposed, and there are grumblings in Kentucky to pass similar laws. On the surface these don’t look too bad and seem to be only concerned with mixed martial arts. It’s really not the case when a person reads the laws. The bills contain a “trigger” that can move a school into all kinds of trouble. One such trigger could be attending an event where a first place trophy is valued over $50. If you are attending from out of state, the penalties climb even higher. This isn’t to put down MMA or the UFC. We mention this because more states and groups are jumping on this regulation bandwagon.
