Rejection opens a wound; betrayal pours the salt. Its more than loneliness. Loneliness leaves you in the cold; betrayal closes the door. Its more than mockery. Mockery plunges the knife; betrayal twists it. Its more than an insult. An insult attacks your pride; betrayal breaks your heart. Betrayal hurts so badly because it comes from someone we trust. When a family member, friend, neighbor, or coworker betrays us, we are devastated. Our world is turned upside down and we feel like we have lost all of our moorings and the ground has slipped out from beneath our feet. Most people respond to betrayal in one of three ways. Some fly into a rage. Others clam up and are consumed with cold fury. Many of us continue to relate to someone who has betrayed us, but the trust has been emptied out of the friendship and it is hollow. -Max Lucado
