Relationship with God Small Comfort for Homeless Small Comfort For Homeless is a project promoted by Hands in Service in Arizona to collect, crochet and distribute the recycled plastic grocery bags into crocheted bed mats for the homeless. These crocheted bed mats are lightweight, washable, protection for a homeless person, against the coldness of ground during the winter season. Here in Arizona, these mats can be used to shelter a person from the hot sun too. How may I help? Several simple options are available to you: Save bags for this project and let us know that you have them. Be a collection site among your family and friends to save bags for this project. Follow the simple directions for folding and cutting the bags, and save these pieces for us. Follow the simple directions for stringing the pieces together to make a seamless ball of bags for us to crochet. Follow the simple directions to crochet the bed mats and let us know you have completed one to be handed out. How Do These Get Distributed? The Oasis Church (which meets at the Basha High School) has a Park Mission that hands out lunches on the third Saturday of the month in downtown Phoenix. Please follow The Oasis link for more information on how we are working to provide a small comfort for homeless in Phoenix. Cutting Directions Simple Cutting Directions: Smooth the bag on a tabletop by holding one handle and the corresponding bottom corner, repeat for other side, and smooth out. Lift one side of the bag and align with other side, matching handle to handle, smoothing a fold in the middle. Life fold to side edge, creating another center fold. Smooth down. Take scissors and cut off handle edge, making a straight cut from side to side. Take scissors and cut off seam edge at the bottom, making a straight cut side to side. (You now have a approx. 14 folded strip with clean edges) Take this folded (approx. 3 wide strip) fold in half from left to right and cut straight along the fold. (created 2 - 7 pieces) Take each halved piece, fold in half from top to bottom and cut along new fold. Each bag makes 4 - 31/2 squares. Note: After cutting handles and bottom seams off - we stack two or three of these stripes on top of each other to fold and cut at one time, saves time and handling of each bag. Linking the Pieces Together Open the 4 pieces up. Lay out the first piece in a circle. Loop second piece through the circle and bring its end over to make a slip knot of the two pieces. Carefully pull to tighten the knot. Repeat with each new circle and make a one long loop of bag pieces. Wind as you would a ball of yarn. Crocheting the Bags Note: Getting started can be a bit of a struggle, however, once you get past the first couple rows - it is extremely easy to keep going. We use a size P crochet hook, and chain 51 stitches, keeping a loose gauge. Single crochet to the end, chain 1 & turn. Until mat measures 7 or 7 - 1/2 - to allow edge to be turned over and crocheted together for a pillow. Straps made to attached to one end, to allow mat to be rolled and tied up - by single crocheting 2 lengths and attaching. Please contact us with any questions or comments. We appreciate all you do in helping with this project, it is a small comfort for homeless people. Thank you for caring. Further projects may be found on the Recycling Connection Page.
