Relationships All of our relationships are in reference to the Great Commandment. When questioned by the young lawyer about which commandment He considered to be the greatest, Jesus answered by saying, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and the great commandment. And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.” What a powerful statement and guide for the way we are to live our lives. All of our relationships are to be based on love. We are to develop a close and personal relationship with Jesus. That relationship begins with our getting to know Him on a more personal basis. We cannot do that without a great deal of discipline and diligence on our part. In 1 Corinthians 13:1-13, Paul gives us a definitive statement on what love is all about. He preferences this chapter by saying in the previous verse (12:31), A “I show you a more excellent way.” Love is the more excellent way. When we truly love Jesus as our Lord and Savior, our relationship to all others will fall into place. In loving others, my love begins with my wife; a most wonderful woman who God blessed me with in our long-standing marriage. A few years ago, I told my wife that she would have to play second fiddle to the Lord. She understood me, and let me know that she was alright with that. She is the love of my life here on earth, and has been for more than fifty-eight years. From our marriage relationship has grown the most wonderful family that a man and a woman could ever hope for. They fall into place as the others I love so much. Our church family comes next in order, and then other friends, etc. My wife would tell you that our years together have not always been easy. We’ve had our disagreements, financial difficulties, health issues, periods of uncertainty and lack of direction at times, but we both understand that God really is in control. Too many people today are not willing to commit to marriage, and if they do, they are ready to bail out when the going gets tough. Faith in God can help to sustain you through the roughest of times, and bless you in ways you cannot imagine.
