Released on this date in 1933, THE INVISIBLE MAN. Directed by James Whale and the debut of Claude Rains as the titular character, THE INVISIBLE MAN is a classic in the halls of horror and science fiction films. Based on the novel by H.G. WELLS, though the film spawned a number of sequel that had little to do with the original premise and story. THE INVISIBLE MAN tells the story of Dr. Jack Griffin, who has stumbled upon a serum for invisibility while working with an experimental drug. The story then follows his descent into criminal madness and were it not for the fact that the bastard is invisible or swaddled in bandages and creepy DR. STRANGELOVE goggles, itd just be a crime movie. But let me tell you, when he disrobes and unwinds the bandages to reveal all of the...nothing beneath, the first time you witness that scene it is jaw droppingly amazing. I was maybe six years old and have NEVER forgotten it. While a sort-of reboot hit in 2000, THE HOLLOW MAN was cool but nowhere near as cool as the original. What is? They dont make em like the classics anymore, and any horror/sci-fi fan worth their salt would likely agree. --John
