Released today in 1984: Hatful Of Hollow, the first in what seemed like a bottomless well of compilations The Smiths would unleash upon us in the coming decades. (Reissue! Repackage! Repackage! indeed.) Essentially an expanded Peel session release, Hatful Of Hollow compiles a bunch of radio sessions for the venerable Peel, along with some sessions for David Jensen and some non-album singles - most of these songs would appear on their self-titled debut LP, but to a song the radio sessions are better, more electric and immediate. It was also the first album to include How Soon Is Now?, which was originally a b-side to William, It Was Really Nothing before it got reissued as its own a-side. Its nearly impossible for me to pick just one song from this album, which I bet Ive listened to a million times. So lets just start at the beginning: William, It Was Really Nothing, as the rain falls on our hum-drum town today:
