Religion: Where We Got It Wrong! We were young and efficient - TopicsExpress

Religion: Where We Got It Wrong! We were young and efficient then, hoping to be the leaders of tomorrow or so we were told during our primary school days. The missionaries will come and we ran to welcome them in Nongvan, their former base at Gurum. We were told they used to settled here, winessed only by our elders as we were not born then. There wasnt anything like sentiment then as Muslims and christians alike walked the same foot-path, join in the celebration of all religious festivities and this runs from our adolescence to maturity where the past begets the present. I remember with pride that my Mom could forget to buy me anything then but my Christmas dress as we troop out to celebrate beside the LCCN Church, Gurum Nogvan having trekked from Gangwon village. Most interestingly, the christmas eve featuring different programmes, birth of Jesus was my favourite. We were seated and watching with rapt attention awaiting Christs descent from heaven till we were overtaken by sleep. This applies to sallah day, the Idl-fitr celebration in Ganye, Gangwari Palace has always been where no one differentiate between a Christian and a muslim. We eat, drink, dance and admire our new dresses sewed by our parents. Throughout millitary rule in Nigeria, we were one, single and indivisible people believing in One God in our own different ways and everyone was happy. But now, religiosity has defined every spheres of our lives. So sad isnt it? It has to do with our ego and quest for leadership at all cost. Our desire for premitive accumulation of wealth. Suddenly, it gets into our head and religion is seen as the willing tool for the attainment of the above. Quack mallams and fake pastors were proliferated, supporting and creating more divides than unity. They remind you of your being a Christian and a muslim and we agree. Consequently, bad blood crept in and we bid a farewell to this beautiful and good days of yesterday. I think there is need for rethink especially that no one actually benefited from all this sham the current politicians are giving to us. What happened to our beautiful past, people?!
