Religion and the placebo effect: The bizarre thing about it is - TopicsExpress

Religion and the placebo effect: The bizarre thing about it is that strong religious belief seemingly helps bring on the placebo effect. Of course what is believed doesnt seem to matter. Vastly different, totally inconsistent sets of beliefs seem capable of helping trigger it. So the truth of the persons belief is irrelevant. Reminds me of the classic story from years ago, when there was the totally unwarranted belief that something called laetrile would cure cancer. Deathly ill patient. Doctor who knows its a lie tells the patient to take laetrile because it will cure him. Patient believes, takes laetrile, is seemingly cure. Then patient, unfortunately, discovers that laetrile is, well, quackery. Patient immediately relapses and dies. People are strange, strange critters.
