Religion is essentially made up stuff. I’m not saying that is a bad thing. It is just what it is. I’m not evening saying that what religion is based on isn’t true. Maybe Jesus did dies on the cross for our sins; maybe Mohammed, blessed be his name, did ride horse to heaven accompanied by the angel Gabriel, and maybe all those contradictions in the Jewish Bible are not contradictions but just mistranslations and misinterpretations. That is all beside the point, for what religion consists of is lot’s of made up stuff; an organized collection of beliefs, cultural systems, and world views that relate humanity to an order of existence. Most religions have narratives, symbols, and sacred histories that are intended to explain the meaning of life and/or to explain the origin of life or the Universe. Though religion is not necessary to have a sense of ethics and morality most people are a bit lazy and averse to ruthless introspection. That being the case it is easier to create beliefs about the cosmos and human nature, and then derive morality, ethics, religious laws or a preferred lifestyle from these beliefs. The most amusing thing about all this is that most people who adhere to some religious faith are likely to believe that they have a profound understanding of things that no one else does other than those with the same belief as them. Being that, according to some estimates, there are roughly 4,200 religions in the world, this is a perfect foundation of lot’s of dogma, self righteousness and misunderstanding.
