Relocate to uplands for safety, Veep emphasizes Government has emphasized the need for the people who are putting up in flood prone areas in the country to relocate to the upland for safety. Vice President Saulos Chilima made the appeal on Friday when he visited Nsanje flood affected people. Chilima’s call comes as over 85, 000 families have been displaced with floods with over 150 people feared dead in Nsanje district alone. “This is a serious crisis as a country. While we are addressing the situation, we need to consider measures to address it once and for all. “Therefore, as government, we emphasize the issue of relocating to the uplands to avoid the same in the future,” he said. The Vice President further advised the Malawians especially those from the flood prone areas to build their houses in the uplands and use the other land for cultivation only. Chilima said: “The areas that are prone to floods should just be used for cultivation but your residence should be in the uplands.” He also urged the people to plant more trees in the rainy season saying can go a long way in mitigating flooding cases which are affecting the country. “Not only planting more trees, as government we will consider constructing dams which will be used to harvest water and control water flooding,” explained the Vice President. Chilima assured the nation that the government has enough resources to assist those affected with the floods. “Let me assure those affected with the flood that the government has enough resources to support you in this time of flood crisis,” he assured. During the visit, the Vice President launched a World Vision Malawi Food Distribution Programme in the district as a response to the flood crisis. According to World Vision Malawi National Director, Robert Kisyula, the launch is the beginning of food distribution in the district to the affected people. “We have brought about 1000 bags of maize flour as a starter pack. We are here to assist the affected people until the situation is stabilized,” he assured
