Relocation of industries makes city liveable Residents living in old localities of Secunderabad and Hyderabad, faced by pollution caused by the industries present nearby, might have reason to cheer. In order to decongest the core city and make it liveable, Telangana state government is relocating industries present in residential areas to the industrial parks developed in the outskirts. In Balanagar, over 150 electroplating units are being shifted to Toopran Industrial Park while over 50 per cent of industries present in Sanathnagar have already been moved to Adibatla and other localities. Similarly, the oil and steel industries present in Kattedan Industrial estate are being moved to Zaheerabad and other areas. Balanagar and Kattedan are one of the oldest localities of the city. Though mostly commercial they are surrounded by several residential areas such as Begumpet, Kukatpally, Jeedimetla, Bowenpally, Trimulgherry and West Maredpally. They are also close to the Hussain Sagar Lake which is being conserved under the Hussain Sagar Lake and Catchment Area Improvement Project. Together these areas amount to 5 per cent of the total residential demand and supply of the city, as per the data available with Magicbricks. “Except Kukatpally, all these areas are established and hence, demand and supply for new properties is low but the move will benefit the residents of these localities,” says Swapna S, of Websqft, a broker firm active in Trimulgherry and nearby areas. EV Narsimha Reddy, executive director of Telangana State Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (TSIIC) says, “According to the new master plan of Hyderabad Municipal Development Authority (HMDA), no new industries can be up on the Outer Ring Road (ORR). Also, expansion of old industries cannot take place so they have to move out. In addition, the industries causing pollution to water bodies, air and soil are also being shifted to outside the ORR. HMDA has identified about 216 locations where such industries can be shifted. We are working with the newly formed Telangana Pollution Control Board for this initiative.” “The plan is to reduce pollution and traffic congestion in the core city and move such industries to the industrial parks where infrastructure and other facilities are being provided by us,”
