Remain” is a loaded word. It can have many different meanings according to the content of the discussion. In today’s passage from John 15:9-17 Jesus places a challenge before us. A few days ago I heard a statistic that some “Latino” people are leaving the Catholic faith for a more generic or a more Fundamentalist/Pentecostal approach for their faith expression. Today Jesus reminds us about “remaining” in this way, “As the Father loves me, so I also love you. Remain in my love.” John 15:9 As we pray today in a pause at work or home, we need to ask ourselves, “How do I remain in God’s love each day? Is my life a witness that I do?” It is not easy when life’s circumstances seem to say “God doesn’t really care about me and my suffering.” I know that despite the difficulty if I remain in the awareness of God’s love for me, I will have the strength coming from that love to trust and find peace. As I pray today, I will try to look at some indicators and see how and why I remain (or do not) see myself remaining in God’s love.
