Remarks by H.E. Constancio Pinto, Vice-Minister and Minister ad interim On the occasion of National Day of the Republic of Korea. Dili, 02 October 2014 Excellency Mr. Ambassador and Mrs. Kim Ki-nam Members of the Diplomatic Corp Distinguished Guests Ladies and Gentlemen It is a great honour for me to join with you here at Hotel Ramelau on the occasion of Korea’s National Foundation Day. It is also an impressive testimony to the people of the Republic of Korea that this anniversary, also known as Tangun Day, has its roots going back so many thousands of years. Tangun Day is of huge significance and is such a vibrant part of the Korean calendar and rightly celebrated where Korean people have made their home from home. This anniversary represents one of the oldest founding dates of nation hood known to human kind and is indeed rightly and widely celebrated as the Traditional Founding Day of the Republic of Korea. It is also a potent symbol of the richness and diversity of the cultural richness and diversity of Korea. The Korean culture has spread far and wide. It has reached all continents and also the shores of Timor-Leste. It is widely welcomed by our people throughout the land. Korea has inspired so many countries around the world to look in wards and value the wonders of their own individual cultures. Korean people around the world rightly participate in this celebration of their uniqueness as a people and nation. But the diversity and progress of Korea in not confined to ancient traditions. Your wonderful country is also one of the economic miracles of modern times. In the age of technology, ever-changing telecommunications information systems, high standards of education, and business opportunities. Korea stands out as one of the shining examples of human ingenuity and progress. You have not been self-centered about your economic achievements for you have sought and continue to share what you have gained withother nations and peoples. Excellency Ambassador, Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen, The bilateral relationship between Timor-Leste and Korea is of huge importance to the Government and people of this country. Korea has played a vital role in the development and prosperity of Timor-Leste. So many Timorese have gained skills, experience and enhanced capacity through training programs provided by the Korean Government and KOICA. Many of our citizens have been welcomed to Korea and your excellent KOICA program is very much focused on our needs as outlined in our National Strategic Plan. At this stage, kindly allow me to pay tribute to the hard working diplomats and officials at the Korean Embassy, KOICA and the Korean language trainers. It is truly a wonder to think that not far from here, in the suburb of Becora, Timorese citizens are learning and are practitioners of the Korean language with the opportunity of finding employment, further education and capacity building in Korea. It is also deeply encouraging that so many Korean people have made their homes in Timor-Leste. Korean business people and entrepreneurs are playing an increasingly significant role in the business life of Timor-Leste. The Government of Timor-Leste welcomes this investment and confidence. We will strive to deepen even further this relationship. Excellency Ambassador, Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen, On this most auspicious day for the Korean people, National Foundation Day, please join me as I toast the Republic of Korea and its wonderful people.
