Remax Rouge River MEMBER ALERT: Suspicious Etobicoke Buyer November 4, 2014 -- A Member has reported receiving a call on her mobile phone on October 28 from an individual claiming that he and his wife were doctors relocating from British Columbia to Toronto for positions at a downtown hospital. The individual indicated that they were pre-approved for a mortgage of $900,000 but preferred to buy a home for less than $800,000 that could in future be torn down and rebuilt. He also noted that the couple had two children and preferred to buy a home in Etobicoke. While communication was underway, a colleague of the Member advised that the individual had also contacted her, harassing her with at least nine telephone calls and rude text messages. As a result, the Member contacted the hospital where the individual claimed to be beginning a new position. The hospital advised that no doctors with the name provided are on its roster or are expected to be in the foreseeable future. While the individual advised the Member and her colleague that he contacted a total of three or four REALTORS®, the Member since learned that the individual called at least four additional female REALTORS® in her office, using the same story. In one instance, however, the individual claimed to have accepted a position at an Etobicoke hospital rather than a downtown hospital. One REALTOR® agreed to meet with the individual and as she waited outside a property accompanied by her husband, she noticed an older, silver Acura slow down, make a U-turn and then speed away. The individual subsequently offered an excuse for not arriving. In every case, the female REALTORS® were contacted directly on their mobile phones rather than through the office, and the properties that the individual requested to view were vacant. Members are reminded to remain extremely vigilant when meeting with new clients and where possible, to be accompanied by an associate when showing properties in such cases.
