Remember First World War - Project “History Campus Europe 14/14” This year, the outbreak of the 1st World War has its 100th anniversary. Under the motto “Look back, think forward”, especially young people from Europe and all over the world were invited to join the Project “History Campus - Europe 14/14” to exchange opinions and remember together within different projects and events in Berlin. German Foreign Minister Steinmeier met young historians from 40 European and African States to discuss the significance of the first World War for Europe’s present as well as the European Project of Peace. Steinmeier said in his speech in the University of Dar es Salaam a few weeks ago: “Despite the active historical debate within Europe, not much attention is given to the War in Africa: a war that cost the lives of countless ‘Askaris’ and carriers, forced to support the European military here; a war that affected civilian populations in Africa often to a larger extent than in mainland Europe, where it was mostly fought in the frontline trenches. Thus, in this year of World War remembrance, Germans also remember the suffering and pay tribute to the victims in Tanzania and Africa.” Let’s remember together and find a good balance between looking back and thinking forward!
