Remember Max? Some of u may not.... We recd a call about Max, about 1 1/2 yrs ago, from a good samaritan who notice that - despite the very nice home and neighborhood this dog lived in - Max was kept outside, chained to a doghouse that he was too big for him to even fit in. He ate and drank out of a filthy metal pail. No matter what the weather was like - Max remained chained to this dog house. When this good samaritan approached him, his ears were so infected that green pus was oozing out of them. She approached the owners who were more than happy to get rid of Max. He was 10 yrs old and they got him as a puppy. He had spend his entire life chained outside. As his painful and infected ears showed, he had not been to a vet in years. A plea was put out for a foster - and an amazing woman stepped forward. She didnt want to foster Max - she wanted to adopt him. We picked up Max from his owners and placed him in our car. He went like he knew he was going to a better place. That he was being saved. Our first stop - Ritas water ice where we bought him vanilla ice cream. His first taste of freedom! The second stop - the vet where his long treatment to getting healthy began. It was there that we found out that his ear infections were probably lifelong and he had suffered terrible pain with them. He had a seizure disorder, thyroid disorder, arthritis, hip dysplasia, and Lymes disease. Maxs body was so beat up - but his gentle demeanor and his HUGE smile told us how much he wanted to live. The first picture is of him chained to his pathetic dog house. The second is of him eating his ice cream the night we picked him up. The 3rd is him - after his grooming and probably the first bath he ever had. The last two are from his new family that were just sent to me today with this latest update.... Hey guys, just wanted to drop you a short note about Max. Living up here in the northern mountains in PA, we get a LOT of snow! That doesnt stop our ole Max - in fact, when that sneaky GSD knows he is not on a leash, he takes off trotting around the farm like hes 5 or something! He has a regular routine with his meds (kept track of by his retired military dad) which has kept all his levels normal with no seizures - he will only take his meds wrapped in bacon and will go to the kitchen when he knows it medicine time. Hip dyspepsia is kept in check with regular pain meds and doesnt stop him from wanting to go out every time mom goes out - even to the barn. Horses there respect him and stay out of his way. We love him so much and people should not be afraid to adopt a senior dog or a dog with health issues - They have so much more to give! Yep. We so totally love this part
