Remember a couple of short weeks ago when the pending Ebolapocalypse was all anyone could think about? Oh, Im sorry...not think, there was no thinking involved in the collective reaction to ebola in the home of the bravely wearing soiled underwear. From teevee newz to pandering politicians, the information leaders seemed to be auditioning for parts in a haunted house event. And most of us obliged like good little Pavlovian dogs. But oddly the certain doom seems to have passed...sometime about a week ago. Hmmm. What happened this time last week? Are Republicans that magical that just by winning elections they eradicated a threat overnight? (Cue the explanation that it was Jesus reward for voting right.) Or maybe its what happens when a no-drama leader facilitates the work of competent government officials to get a handle on a situation based on expert scientific advice, without resorting to empty, feel-good gimmicks like travel bans or mandatory, bizarrely punitive quarantines for the uninfected professionals on the front lines of eradicating the threat. Quietly competent, intelligent leadership. I wonder what we could have accomplished over the past 6 years with a political system, media & public worthy of that leadership? Whats been accomplished despite the abysmal state of our politics, our media & ourselves should be an indicator of opportunities missed.
