Remember in college when the professor would show a film and two-thirds of the class would sneak out as soon as the room went dark? When that happened to us once in a poli-sci class, the prof, a little communist guy named George Wright, cranked the lights back up and launched into a furious rant about our disrespect and laziness, our lack of commitment to the class and to learning, our piteous slackitude in general while we cowered in silence in our seats. Until one girl meekly raised her hand, cocking her head toward the rest of us, and said quietly, “But we stayed.” That was such a great lesson for me and I never forgot it. As frustrating as everything seems, don’t take it out one the ones who stayed.
