Remember... it wasnt all that long ago that the author of this article would have been hauled in to Congress to face down Joe McCarthy and his xenophobic goon squad. Never forget that when many Americans laud the ideals of freedom, they mean only the freedom to think, believe, act, and live as they do. Not much has changed in the decades following the McCarthy era. Oh, we like to pretend it has. We sprain our shoulders patting ourselves on the back because we no longer formally blacklist people who express communist viewpoints, but how much has truly changed? Now instead of targeting alleged communists, we target suspected terrorists. The prejudice has not changed. Weve simply modified its target to be more socially acceptable to the 21st Century threats to our way of life. Its time for everyone to discover for themselves the true nature of capitalism, communism, and all the assorted economic/government -isms weve all been told to either love or hate, without ever being encouraged to think about why or investigate any further. Capitalism = eternal utopia. Communism = unimaginable hellscape. Right? Thats what weve been trained to believe. But is it true? Why is communism bad? Why is capitalism good? Can you answer those questions for yourself, based on your own personal belief system and internal moral compass, without simply parroting back the talking points that have been overtly and covertly drilled into us for decades? Most cant. And that needs to change if we ever hope to evolve past the rapidly crumbling economic and government systems we have today.
