Remember the Seinfeld episode when Elaine got tossed from the Yankee Stadium owners box because she wore an Orioles hat? Unfortunately, we didnt have the same luck yesterday in Green Bay. Our four day, three game weekend (Yankees in NY and Baltimore Thurs/Fri) came to an end with the annual Jets road game. This one took Jason, Scott and me to one of the great American sports venues, Lambeau Field in Green Bay, with tickets provided not by the owner but an even higher authority - NFL Hall of Famer and three time Packer Super Bowl champion quarterback, Bart Starr, who lives in Birmingham and was a member of the Medjet Advisory Board. Mr. Starr is convalescing from a recent illness but was kind enough to provide seats to us wayward Jets fans, easy to spot with the wrong color green, on perfect 50 yard line seats. Packers fans, likely the most hospitable in the league, even invite visitors to participate in their legendary tailgate celebrations once theyve had enough Old Style and welcome you as an old friend. Unless of course you pull for the Bears. A magnificent fall afternoon in a breathtaking setting couldnt have started better for the long suffering green and white backers as the Jets raced to a 21-3 lead. The locals started to choke on their brats and became a bit snarly. I told them not to worry- we are the Jets for a reason. It would have been an ideal time for security to come Elaine-us and toss us from the two time Super Bowl MVPs seats. We would have been bounced with a seemingly insurmountable Jets lead. Visions of defending our 1969 Super Bowl title danced atop our green hats with the little airplane on it. But fear not, we are the Jets and for the last 45 years have figured out ways to muck things up; Sunday was no exception. A 97-yard Green Bay TD drive right before the half; then a late third quarter Jets interception called back for having too many men on the field (was that wrong?); your best defensive lineman getting ejected cause he threw a punch and then the epitome of a very weak coaching staff- calling a timeout one second before a snap that nullified a game tying touchdown. We leave Wisconsin still dreaming about our lone Super Bowl visit. And among the hoopla of 78,000 chanting Go Pack Go, you could hear the faint chant from the multitude of New York supporters- J-E-T-S, which among our nation has come to mean- Just End The Season. As a Jets supporter from the 1962 days when they were known as the Titans, we know from experience never to expect too much and its never too early to call it quits. Anybody seen Joe Namath?
