Luke 1: 68-79 “The Journey Home: The Way of Peace” The angel Gabriel appeared to an elderly priest and announced his wife Elizabeth (also getting on in years) would bear a son. Zechariah, initially unbelieving, was unable to speak during Elizabeth’s entire pregnancy and the birth of their son. On the eighth day after his birth, they came to circumcise the baby and were going to name him Zechariah, after his father, but Zechariah, echoing Elizabeth’s response, writes: “His name is John”. Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke prophetically, a beautiful song often called the Benedictus, which ends: “By the tender mercy of our God, the dawn from on high will break upon us, to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.” (Luke 1:79) For a child has been born to us, a son given to us; he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
