Remember the comment I made several weeks ago and the great response it got:"There are more ways of killing a cat than choking it to death on sweet cream!" Well, there are more ways of adding a clothes closet to a Victorian bedroom (which usually had NONE) than chopping off a square corner in the side of the room and giving the remainder a weird shape. Not to mention the fact that it usually looks like a bumbling add-on. One clever way assuming that the room has Victorian proportions, is to take a complete side of the bedroom which has no windows and build a built-in space approx 26 inches deep across the entire wall, dividing it into thirds. The center section becomes a recessed and very dramatic area for recessing the bed, especially when draped on ceiling as well as all three wall spaces with fabric. Additional material may serve as a canopy awning across the front and curtains may extend out another 26 inches on the sides, if desired. The closet spaces can go floor to ceiling and the openings can use shutters or louvers, antique or new. This allows fold back opening and access to the entire space...plus, the height allows for double hung rods and a shoe rack below(double the normal closet space) for an extra bonus to increase the visual size of the room, hang a group of antique mirrors of different sizes with wonderful old frames in a grouping on the fabric wall behind the bed. The room will not only appear larger than before but will not appear to have been altered. And for a convincing look, add a large crown molding around the entire room including the new addition.
