Remember this little beauty....when it came to me,it had been running poorly, pretty much breaking down every time the owner Chris took it out.It had been to another shop several times and still didnt want to behave, so she brought it to me...initial checks showed stuff like tappet clearances and ignition timing were spot on but the poor thing was not charging properly at all, barely making 12 volts. On checking out the alternator I found it was pretty much on its last legs,so on my advice Chris ordered a (PMA) Permanent Magnet Alternator conversion from the good old USA,as it cost the same as used Yamaha parts from Evilbay. Further investigation found the bike had been rewired without a voltage regulator ! only then did I realise the battery was probably toast also...yep I was right..Now,custom bikes being just that, meant the battery was hidden away down low behind the engine, which meant removal of the rear mudguard and wheel to get the battery out ! Not only that the way its been set up means only one particular brand and size of battery will fit,Doh ! that got ordered today after I failed to find anyone local with one in stock..:( Anyway, next thing to do was mount the regulator / rectifier which came with the PMA kit...Now this needs airflow to stay cool so putting it the electrical box just wasnt going to work and space under the box (of which all the fasteners enter from underneath so they are hidden) is VERY limited, but I managed to fabricate a little bracket to mount it just in front of the rear mudguard, that picks up on the rear electrical box screws, its a right pain to fit with the limited access, but there was nowhere else to put it.without it looking butt ugly...As soon as the battery arrives the assembly process goes like this, battery in and hooked up,wheel in,rear mudguard on,electrical box / regulator assembly in,then all I have to worry about is getting all the wiring routed back in through the holes in the bottom of the box ! check out the pix to see how tight this shit is....
