Remember when tapsilog was the in thing? Lahat ng kanto may tapsihan. Then, there was the milk-tea craze followed by thematic carinderias food-wise, and budget spas/salons recreation-wise. Just last week on a drive from Malabon to Manila then to Novaliches and back to Malabon, we saw an abundance of pet salons and pet grooming establishments. For a developing country, one could say that such trend is reflective of why we remain one. The market dictates business trends - law of supply and demand. Maraming pet grooming salons dahil may malaking market-base for that. Several years back, tanda ko kailangan ko pang magpa-appointment sa vet ko so he can give my cat a medicated bath. The vet bathes my cat single-handedly with me watching. He will give me tips during the process, aside from the many questions I asked, tips that up to now I find useful whenever I have to bathe my pets. I was charged ₱1000 for that, eight or so years ago. After a couple of sessions, I felt I was able to do it myself, and I do so until now, will probably do so for the rest of my pet-caring life. Napakamura na lang magpa-groom ngayon, for as low as ₱150, mangangamoy artificial or air freshener na ang pet mo. Bonus, pwedeng balikan mo na lang to maximize your time, or so you thought. Have you made rounds of pet salons recently? Nakita mo na ba yung mukha ng mga nakapilang pets sa cages? I believe may mangilan-ngilan who put up or work in a pet-related establishment out of pure love for pets, but obviously marami ang nasa pet industry just for the money. Kung urgent and serious, go to the vet! You go to FB groups kung walang urgency or kung wala ka na talagang choice. Groups are there for support and exchange of ideas, not for free medical consultations! Sa akin lang naman yan, I could be wrong but I honestly believe I am not. I once accompanied a friend in a posh pet salon in MOA to have her tom groomed. We claimed him smelling fresh with his fur trimmed and with fresh tiny cuts around his eyes. My friend did not bother to fuss over the accidental cuts, the scent and feel of her freshly groomed pet made her oblivious of the fact that her cat had freaking cuts, that he might have been hurt, that he might have been unhappy, and that the session could have been a nightmare for him. The case of a tzu dying by hanging in the hands of his groomer is now circulating online. Death by hanging is an agonizing way to die. I can just imagine the pain and anger of the owners. Many are saying the owners must sue the establishment, said shop deserves to be be closed, I agree. But, there is more to the case than punishing the culprits. There is always another dog at another groomers hands, trembling and scared, with his owners unaware. Grooming your pet might not be easy but it is not very hard either. It would require patience and you taking your commitment by heart. You are a parent, not just a provider. Your willingness to spend money or the amount of money you are willing to spend for your pet is not the measure of your parenting skills and efforts. Your pets are happiest when they are with you, you should know that if you truly care for them. Not unless we change our mindset towards pet-parenting and the pet industry in general, there will be more and worse. If you dont have the time, the energy, the courage, the interest, the will, or the space for pet grooming then I think you arent fit to have a pet anytime soon. PS: I feel for the owners. They are not to blame. I am just saying we should all learn how to groom our pets ourselves or at least have our trusted vet/professional groomer do it and teach us. why you should groom your pet yourself: https://facebook/notes/we-sell-stuff/why-you-should-groom-your-pet-yourself/1501462200102912
