Flying from, to when some discovered The other side Feelings A reflection in the mirror of memories Boys and girls in a hurry Not to worry Men and women Struggling to love that boy, that girl, A reflection in the mirror of the memories of The best, to be the best, to have the best, to do the best, Unafraid, fierce! Language builds community Such as religious, political, economic, Words speaking truth to power From the heart, Words that spark the imagination In the dark, spilling into light Radiant hues – red, yellow, brown Black as midnight, White before the Mayflower and its codes Of less than Better than children of a lesser god Minority status Keep the Negroes in their places Unemployed and poor Underemployed and hungry and determined to be Poor no more, Hungry no more, To rise above the status quo Schisms, arising from want, need, desire, control Destiny Control my destiny, Set the course, We’re coming into Power We are, Therefore, I am.
