Remembering Country singer/songwriter Conway Twitty born on this day in Friars Point, MS in 1933. Until 2006, Twitty, né Harold Lloyd Jenkins (so named after the silent movie star), held the record for the most No.1 singles of any act, amassing a staggering fifty-five, forty of which were US Billboard Country chart-toppers between 1968 and 1986 - no mean feat considering many dee-jays initially refused to play his singles believing him to be a RocknRoll singer. Indeed, Twitty had begun his career recording in a R&B and Rockabilly vein, later scoring a massive Pop hit with 1958s Its Only Make Believe, an emotive ballad co-written by Twitty and drummer James Nance. In the 1970s he received four Country Music Association awards for his duets with Loretta Lynn, and a further six from the Academy of Country Music, including one for Top Male Vocalist in 1975. Although never a member of the Grand Ole Opry, Twitty was nonetheless inducted into the Country Music and the Rockabilly Halls of Fame. Twitty passed in June 1993. Nearly twenty years after his death and more than fifty years after it was recorded, Lonely Blue Boy was featured in the soundtrack to the 2011 thriller Limitless.
