Remembering Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (1929-1968) today. Having the good fortune of growing up in Los Angeles, California instead of Selma, Alabama, the Civil Rights Movement was not in my face like it was in other parts of the country in the mid-1960s. We watched it all on newsbreaks on black & white TV then. Scary stuff. I felt so sorry for those poor folks who were being tormented by White Supremacists in the Deep South. Although the Civil Rights Act of 1964 legally desegregated the South, discrimination was still rampant in certain areas, making it very difficult for blacks to register to vote. In 1965, Selma, an Alabama city became the battleground in the fight for suffrage. Despite violent opposition, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (David Oyelowo) and his followers pressed forward on an epic march from Selma to Montgomery, and their efforts culminated in President Lyndon Johnson signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Go see the new movie SELMA this week and see for yourself to get a feel what it was like in parts of America 50 years ago. We thought we were so progressive, but America was taking one step forward and two steps back until the mid-1970s when all this racial tension was laid bare and laid back. And the struggle for liberty and freedom is not over yet. There are those within and outside of America who are planning to destroy our American way of life. Heres to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness! :) https://youtube/watch?v=ch-xewJ-1H0#t=41
