In the summer of 1999, the country fought its fourth war with Pakistan in Kargil. 14 years have passed since the war cries fell silent and the nation has moved on. What remains are memories of lives cut short and the sad tales of families of martyr soldiers. For us, it is time to honour the valiant souls who laid down their lives so that we could have a better existence. Events as they unfolded: Feb 21, 1999 Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee signs the Lahore Declaration with Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif May 5, 1999 Pakistani troops spotted on Batalik Heights by two shepherds May 15, 1999 Lt Saurabh Kalia, along with five jawans, leaves for a routine patrol of the Bajrang Post in the Kaksar sector when he is captured by the enemy. He and the five jawans are brutally tortured for 22 days after which their mutilated bodies are returned to the Army May 26, 1999 Indian Army launches Operation Vijay. Two divisions of the army -- numbering 20,000, plus several thousand from the Indian Paramilitary Forces and the AIr Force --are deployed in the conflict zone July 26, 1999 The Army launches its final attacks in the last week of July. As the last of the jihadis in the Drass sub-sector are cleared, the Kargil war comes to an end on July 26, 1999. The day has since been marked as Kargil Vijay Diwas
