Remembering Linda Ballesteros. I remember my first days at Kamehameha in 1958, was very frightening for a country girl from Aiea, once a Plantation town. I felt so out of place. I had led a very sheltered life. I was fortunate when Linda Ballesteros took me in along with her other boarder friends. Linda was very proud of being from Kau, on the Big Island. Then there was Esther Kailihewa from Maui. Esther and I were new students, and Linda made us both feel welcome. Noelani Webster also a boarder but from Oahu, was also a good friend along with Carrie Thompson of Molokai. How my life was enriched by these girls from the outer islands. It was Linda who welcomed me into her circle of friends. I think they forgot I was an awful day student. Boarders and Day Students came from different worlds and usually did not intermingle very much. How lucky I was because they were so proud of where they came from and often told me of their lives on the outer islands. My small world was opened up to the outside world. My life was surely enhanced by knowing them. I will always be grateful to Linda for befriending me, a shy country girl! Linda had a large impact on my life at Kamehameha. I felt safe and secure with a friend like Linda. Thank you Linda. Though we have seen each other for just a couple of times in the last 50 years, you have been carried in my heart!
