Remembering September 11. This is a unique and exciting time to live. Globalization has brought people of different faiths and civilizations closer to each other, to the extent that one can appreciate how small the world has become in the last few decades. In ancient times it took over three weeks for the news of Julius Caesars assassination to reach Jerusalem. Today, with the advent of mass communication tools, people witness live events as they unfold. Though globalization as a whole has been beneficial to humanity in improving the social interaction of different cultures and civilizations, the flip side of the coin is its tendency to unmask and escalate intercultural and interreligious conflicts. The events of 9/11 exemplified this: the attack on the World Trade Center and Pentagon were seen as the epitome of the age-old conflict between Islam and Christianity. Just as the terrorists were wrong to use the Holy Quran to justify their acts, the opponents also referred to out of context Quranic verses to show its volatile preaching; at least here both were in agreement that Islam preaches extremism. And just like Christianity, which once was looked upon with suspicion after the fire of Rome during Emperor Nero’s reign, Islam, too, had to go through a period of tough scrutiny in the post 9/11 era.
