Remembering The Smiling Pope with Gods Smile, The Servant of God Pope John Paul I, formerly Cardinal Albino Luciani, Patriarch of Venice, on the 35th Anniversary of his election to the See of Peter (26th August 1978), whose brief pontificate lasted only 33 days Let us pray that it will not be very far when this saintly courageous Pope will be raised to the altars. May bishops (including those of our country) learn from his example. Although he was so meek and kind and humane, he did not hesitate to be strong and pungent whenever he needed, as on matters of faith and of Catholic doctrine he was intransigent and left no room for compromise. For example, during the divorce referendum in Italy, Cardinal Luciani, Patriarch of Venice did not hesitate to state that voting in favour of divorce in the referendum is a serious sin and he barred all those within his diocese who were campaigning in favour or advocating of the introduction of divorce (politicians, journalists and media personalities) from receiving Communion. When the FUCI (Federation of Italian Catholic University Students) and the student community of San Trovaso took a stand in support of the introduction of divorce, he immediately suppressed both organizations in his diocese, thereby causing a sensation throughout the country.
