Remembering a great Singer and International Star ~ Ofra Haza. Known as The Madonna of the East, Ofra Haza had an enchanting voice that made her an international music sensation. Bat-Sheva Ofra Haza was born the youngest of nine children, to a Yemenite Jewish family, in the Hatikva Quarter, an impoverished neighborhood of Tel Aviv. By the time she had completed her military service in 1979, Haza had matured as a singer and was ready to launch a solo career. Utilizing a mix of Eastern Yemenite songs and Western Pop Instrumentations, Haza had a sound that was very different in the Pop culture making her Israels music princess. Sadly, her career was cut short at the age of 42 after contracting the AIDS virus from either a blood transfusion in a Turkish hospital due to a miscarriage, or from her husband who was reportedly an addict. She passed away in February of 2000. The reports about how this very popular star contracted AIDS caused quite a controversy in Israel, but she remains to this day one of that countrys music legends.
