Remembering our Orang Asli I woke up in the middle of the nite - TopicsExpress

Remembering our Orang Asli I woke up in the middle of the nite to the sound of rain. I kept thinking about the flood and the victims, especially our Orang Asli communities of Tasik Chini. Our exeprience During the big flood earlier this year, made me realized that they were in dire need of clean water and food. Our research team brought boxes of bottled drinks and dried food to our OA at Tasik Chini. One important lesson I learned from this flood experience. Our research revealed that in times of crisis or disaster, the Orang Asli continue to feel being excluded from mainstream society. Our mass media hardly highlight their plight. While efforts were made to assist them, the support is unlike that extended to the mainstream society. Clearly, much more need to be done. When we visited their villages, the village wells, which is one of their main sources of water supply were submerged by the flood. Bottled drinks and dried/canned food were very much in demand cos they cannot cook nor can they find other sources of clean water (especially when the rain stopped but their water level had not dropped). I urge and hope that we extend whatever support we can to our OA communities, lest we forget them at this time when our attention were focused on the flood affecting our mainstream communities.
