Remembering some of my ancestors I do not often mention... 1) Michael Hyder......my 5th great-grandfather Birth: Abt. 1745 in Hampshire County, Virginia (now W. VA), USA Death: Jun. 25, 1790 in Carter County, TN, USA Husband of Elizabeth Wood. Father of James, Mary Elizabeth Polly, Martha, Adam, Jacob, Michael Jr, Joseph, Jonathan, Benjamin, Nancy and John. Member of the Watauga Association in Watauga Fort, June 21, 1776. Took part in all the early Indian wars in Tennessee under Shelby, Sevier and Christian. Was in the following battles of the Revolution, Thickety Fort, Cedar Springs and Musgroves Mill in South Carolina. Was detailed from the Kings Mountain, SC expedition to defend the Watauga Settlement from Indian invasion. Photos pulled from Find-A-Grave. 2) Rev. Gary Davis...my 4th great-grandfather Born: 16 Jan. 1799 in SC Died: 04 Aug. 1875 in Cobb County, GA Son of Richard Davis & Amy Loveless Davis. Married Sarah Sallie Floyd on 06 Dec. 1821. Was also a Methodist minister in Cobb County. He wasnt a soldier per se, but during the Civil War he remained in the south but apparently refused to take up arms. If what I read in documents is correct, he did not take sides. He was taken to prison by the Confederates for this and was gone for months. During that time, the Union Army camped out on his property and utilized many items from the farm. He was later released from prison by the Confederates and returned home to discover a lot of his property gone after being used bo the northern army. After the war, he petitioned the U.S. Government to be compensated for the items the Union Army had used/taken. He did get some money back, but nowhere near what he requested. A historical marker is in Cobb County, GA near the cemetery where he is buried...which is also near his old home place. The photo was one I took in November 2009 after a rededication ceremony by an Eagle Scout for the nearby Davis-Hill Cemetery where Gary is buried. 3) William Brown...my ggg-grandfather Born: Abt. 1825 in Walton County, GA Died: 1863 in Bridgeport, TN Son of Andrew Brown & Charity Ragland Brown. Married Nancy A. Davis, daughter of Rev. Gary Davis & Sarah Sallie Floyd Davis. He served in the Conderate Army and was killed in Brideport, TN according to a tombstone at New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery in Paulding County, Georgia. Not much data has been found on him. He left at least 6 children behind for wife, Nancy, to raise on her own. The photo was shared by a cousin in Chickamauga, Georgia.
