Remembering the passengers of EAL Flight 961 - November 23 --- --- On this date on November 23, 1996, Ethiopian Airlines Flight 961 was hijacked en route from Addis Ababa to Nairobi, and would subsequently run out of fuel and crash land into the Indian ocean a mile from shore of the Comoros Islands. The tragic end would leave 125 of the 175 passengers, crew, and all three hijackers dead. Citizens from 25 different countries, including Ethiopia were on board the flight. Among those lost that day was Kenyan Mohammed Amin, considered one of Africas most celebrated photographers, who was returning from a photo assignment from Ethiopia. Both the pilot, Cpt. Leul Abate and the co-pilot Yonas Mekuria survived. The final moments of the flights crash were captured on video and has since become a made for television movie. (Photo: The Monument to Canadian Aid Workers in the capital city of Ottawa is dedicated to Canadian Aid workers who lost their lives during foreign deployments. The monument was partially constructed to honor Tim Stone, the executive director of the organization PATH Canada(Programme for Appropriate Technology in Health) who died on EAL Flight 961. PATH Canada, the Canadian Red Cross, and the Canadian Nurses Association collaborated the monument that also honored two other Canadians lost that year.)
