Reminder: Join the LCSO Tonight for a Scam & Fraud Prevention Class go.usa.gov/9DHT Loudoun County, VA- Scams and fraud cases are on the rise in Virginia and the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office is offering residents a free course on how you can protect yourself from becoming a victim. The course is taught by the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office Crime Prevention Unit and will be held June 25th at 7PM in the Dulles South Public Safety Center Community Room. The Dulles South Public Safety Center is located at 25216 Loudoun County Parkway, Chantilly, VA. In recent months, the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office Financial Crimes Unit has worked a number of scams where callers are purporting to be from the IRS, local law enforcement, and other government agencies, and convincing unsuspecting residents they owe fines and could face arrest. In most of the cases the victims are asked to obtain money cards, such as Green Dot MoneyPak or Reloadit cards, and provide the information to the caller. In many cases the victims are scammed out of thousands of dollars. “The suspects are often convincing by using the appearance of authority and also prey on a person’s fears by threatening arrest,” said Loudoun Sheriff Mike Chapman. “Many of these scams are originating from overseas and we hope to educate the community before they become a victim,” added Sheriff Chapman. Residents are reminded that law enforcement will never ask for money in lieu of an arrest, and residents are encouraged to contact the Loudoun Sheriff’s non-emergency number at 703-777-1021 to verify a caller claiming to be from the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office.
