Removing old fishing nets from Puget Sound waters restores habitat, saves fish, crustaceans and other marine animals from accidental death, and helps keep our local fishing industry strong. The Northwest Straits Initiative does good work in getting these old nets out of the water, and you can read about it in the Skagit Valley Herald story below. I introduced a bill in 2008 to renew and expand Northwest Straits’ important conservation efforts, and I have supported federal funding for these projects that both protect our environment and create jobs.
