Remus! Remus! Come inside now its starting to get dark. Remus turned around to look at his mother with wide pleading eyes and a small frown that he knew his mum couldnt resist saying yes too. Please mum, just a bit longer! I want to see the moon he begged his mum. Hope Lupin narrowed her eyes at her six-year old son from where he sat on their front lawn, staring at the darkening sky, watching the stars pop into sight. Oh alright she conceded but you have to come in as soon as your father comes home from work Hope said knowing that her husband would be home any minute so she didnt need to worry about her son sitting safely in the confines of their front yard. Ok mum he said smiling satisfied at her I love you mummy he grinned as Hope retreated inside. Remus went back to staring at the sky while Hope watched him from the kitchen window where she was supervising her dishes scrubbing themselves clean in the sink set below it. She looked down at a dish with a particularly tough stain and when she glanced back up again there was a dark figure standing over Remus. Assuming it was her husband she called out the window Lyall dear, can you bring Remus in now? I dont want him to catch a cold then she went back to her dishes. Remus was staring at the spot the full moon would make its appearance when a shadow blocked his view of the stars. He looked up at the man standing over him then got to his feet. Hello mister he said politely are you lost? The man shook his head. Remus saw his head was covered in filthy matted hair and his teeth had funny red and yellow stains, his fingernails were elongated and his clothes were in a similar state of disrepair. But Remus had always been taught not to judge someone on their outwards appearance so when the man smiled slowly and sadistically, Remus thought he was just trying to be friendly back. I’ll go get my mum. She can help you Remus said smiling happily before he heard his mum call out the kitchen window. Lyall dear, can you bring Remus in now? I dont want him to catch a cold. Remus immediately searched around for his dad expecting him to be somewhere close by, but his eyes snapped back to the man, disappointed when his father didnt make an appearance. But there was something happening to the man. As the moon rose behind him, Remus could see his face getting longer and furrier. His hands were cracking and changing too, his feet were getting bigger and hair was bursting out of every inch of his skin. He looked like a big man-wolf. During this transformation Remus had backed away until his back had hit a tree. He spun around and scrambled up it as the man-wolf charged at him hitting the tree trunk hard with its massive head. Remus cried out in terror as the man-wolf continued to bunt the tree until, with an almighty crash, it fell to the ground. Remus pulled himself out of the wreck of branches, which snagged his clothes and hair as he struggled to escape, and took off down the street, running as fast as he could. But he barely got two blocks before the man-wolf got its bearings and took after him then, finally, managed to sink its teeth into Remus outstretched arm. Remus heard a scream of horror coming from his house as Hope sprinted, wand drawn, towards her son. Releshio! she shrieked. The werewolf’s jaw snapped open, releasing its prey but he did not stop there. The werewolf pounced at the boy again but Remus threw up his arms, protecting his face, and the werewolf flew backwards as though it had hit some kind of invisible barrier that had sprung up around Remus. He continued to circle the transparent shield around Remus until Hope caught up, sending curse after curse at the werewolf. Fenrir Greyback backed off growling then took off running, full tilt down the street. Remus passed out. When he awoke, Remus was in St Mungos and he couldnt seem to understand why his mother was crying and why his dad keep throwing things, blaming himself and swearing. Hed never known his dad to swear before. As far as Remus knew, he had had a lucky escape and he was quite pleased that he had managed to do magic for the first time to defend himself. He had only gotten a little bite in the arm. It wasnt so bad. After all, how much trouble could one bite cause? - Cristie
