What makes chattel slavery different is the fact that the African was stripped completrly of is language and culture. The europeeon attempted to create a zombie like creature with no past history, this is what afflicts many of us today, our concept of self has been eliminated our culture desimated by slavery. She said she could have freed twice as many,but they were zombified, the only thing theyd ever know was servitude to the devil and his bile bull/bible. When you talk about slavery you must make this distinction, there is no atypical slavery, the institution is much more complex than you imagine. African slaves married into families in Africa,there is no blanket slavery, very few have studied the institution.
