Repeat for the newbies .... Mud run gear ... Learn from my mistakes Bring the following to any mud run. Please add to the list your own discoveries... Essentials for mudruns: > non-cotton clothing (shoes, socks, underwear, shorts, shirts, headbands ... all of it! Keep the cotton stuff at home) Recommended for races: > calve sleeves > duct tape (to wrap your shoe) > mustard packets (for 5+ mile runs .. trust me as I cant stand mustard but it is my friend after 5+ miles) and something to carry them in (either run shorts with pockets or run pak. Prefer run pack as it can be zipped) > Gu-pack (for 5+ mile runs ... carry with mustard packets) > Bug spray and more bug spray (dont spray on forearms/back of hand as you may end up with bug spray in your eyes after using to wipe sweat off your face) > sunblock > attitude and determination .... you can do it, and have fun at the same time! Carry in your run bag for afterwards: > change of dark, yes dark, clothing thats easy to put on (prefer loose ... saw a guy wearing a kilt once. For colder runs, sweats and fleece wear) > flip-flops (your feet will love the fresh air plus youll want to wear when washing off) > grocery/garbage bags to put dirty cloths in > large and small towel (there may not be a change tent at your run event so you may need to change under a large towel) > cash (for food, beer, parking, bag check) > Your own recovery food > your own beverages discretely brought in. > hat (your hair will not be at its finest after a few rounds of sweat-mud-rinse ... and there is always someone around snapping pictures afterwards) > hand sanitizer (this is usually at most runs ... you may have to track it down) > towels or blanket for the car. No matter how well you hose off with cold water, you will still end up with dirt in your seat or seat belt. > funny stories about all the crazy obstacles you encountered ... and the crazy people Optional Race (nice to have if you are paranoid ... keep in your car ): > extra run shoes > extra shoelaces > extra socks > extra run shorts (hey... your first pair could split pre-race on ya! ...remember I did say paranoid) > blister packs (I carry one in my run pak just in case I get a blister deep into a course) > sharpie - for your own markings/slogans > defibrillator
