Report Title: Ashbourne Still Waiting for a Win Competition, Venue, Date, KO Time: Leinster League Div. 1A at Cill Dara Saturday the 11th of October 2014 3.00pm kickoff 4 games gone and 4 losing points, but the capability is there and if they persist Ashbourne will get the break through they deserve. Gleeson’s men have all the ability but they must close out a game. This was a sucker punch as it was the last kick of the game that nudged Cill Dara back ahead. Credit to Cill Dara for staying focussed but this was game where Ashbourne dominated in the set piece and showed great endeavour with ball in hand, but lack of focus got them in the end. Starting brightly Ashbourne were ahead after 5 minutes with a Dunne long range penalty. But from the restart the conceded a soft try where a ball was hacked through and the covering Ashbourne player miscued his kick over the try line only to be beaten to it by a Cill Dara player. Ashbourne struck back and Simon Deevy scored a well-taken try with a quick tap penalty. Crotty converted and they led by 10 points to 5. Hughes on the wing was making some good breaks while Schutz, in for the injured Gavin Kennedy was getting the ball out to Crotty well. The pack was ahead in all aspects of set play. Dunne and Crotty both added penalties for Ashbourne as they tried to build on their lead. Some adventurous play in the backline did open up the Cill Dara defence but the try line was not breached again in the first half. The score was 16 to 5 for Ashbourne at the break. Cill Dara struck first in the second half when Ashbourne still seem to be having there break and the game was now on. Crotty responded with a penalty 10 minutes later, but Cill Dara were on the board again with their 3 try. At 17 points to 19 Ashbourne looked like it was only a matter of time before they were caught. But they rallied and the got the next score. Following serious Ashbourne pressure, McNally who was on at 9 for Schutz, cleared a quick ball from the base of a ruck to find Kent charging in at a great angle. Crotty converted and Ashbourne led by 26 points to 17 with 20 left. But that was the last Ashbourne score and a try from Cill Dara with 5 minutes left narrowed the game to 2 points. Ashbourne brought on Mahon and Walsh to give fresh legs but a penalty on the stroke of half time proved to be the winner. Ashbourne head into a two week break now and hopefully they can regroup and get some injured bodies back. They are only 2 points adrift and have plenty to play for. If they believe ion themselves they will win and push on. Final score Ashbourne win by 30 points to 6. Ashbournes next game is at home to Coolmine but not till Saturday the 1st of November at 2.30pm. The second XV also play at 1.00pm at the same venue Tries Simon Deevy X 1 Sean Kent X 1 Conversions: Donal Crotty x 2 Penalties: Donal Crotty x 2 Casey Dunne X 2 Full-Time Score: Cill Dara ...……….. 27 Ashbourne ………….. 26 Team: Mitchell O’Meara, Casey Dunne, Adam Sherrard, Sean Kent, Adam Hughes, Donal Crotty, Zbynck Schutz, Rory Gleeson, James McCaghy, Alan Wall, Ciaran Roche, Darragh Curran, Cathal O’Connor, Mark Rooney, Simon Deevy Subs: Aaron O’Toole, Jan Tieber, Conor McNally, Jeff Mahon, Shane Walsh Ashbourne 2nd XV made three wins out three with a great win in Cill Dara on Saturday. The score at halftime was 17 points to 6 to Ashbourne. He added two more penalties in the second half while Anthony McCreevy rowed in with a great try as well, which Toolan also converted to give him a 15-point haul playing from fullback. The pack was strong with Lucas, Norton and Boylan fronting up well. Gallagher leads the team from 8 with Grieve and Dervan get through a lot of work with Brennan and O’Toole. Tieber in the centre got in a lot big breaks and tackled hard and with McCreevy make a formidable partnership at this level. Broughton, who is ageless, linked well with Conaty and Scanlon was always busy. Well-done boys!
