Report on July 22 PDA meeting The PDA’s had their monthly meeting at the Edge Coffee House with 22 in attendance. Among the special guests was Mayor Jackie McPherson of Heber Springs who is running for U.S. Representative for the 1st Congressional District against Rick Crawford. A representative of the Young Democrats of Arkansas State University and workers from the Democratic coordinated campaign for northeast Arkansas were also there. Heber Springs Mayor Jackie McPherson has an impressive record as the leader of a growing town with improvements in infrastructure, schools, community and recreation facilities, and has attracted hospitals and industry to locate or remain there. His hard work ethic began in childhood and includes the sacrifice of a college scholarship to join his mother in factory work to help his family. He has been a small business owner and long-time community leader. While he feels the Affordable Care Act may be improved, he also believes it has touched hundreds of thousands of lives and made them better in Arkansas, including his sister, a nurse, who would have lost everything when she developed cancer had it not been for the Affordable Care Act. It has helped rural hospitals survive. He also has a special interest in the survival of Arkansas small farmers and he is a supporter of the Arkansas increase in minimum hourly wage from $6.25 to $8.50 (over three years) and also in equal pay for equal work. He has been “use to hard work all my life” as he says and we believe his values and record of making life better for Arkansas working families is what is called for now and what has been very absent with Rep. Crawford. About---Mr. Living-High-On-the-Hog, former bankrupt filer, radio-TV guy, Rep Crawford: has anyone else noticed how aloof and unfriendly Crawford is when he goes out in public meetings that are not “Republican only.” Guy acts like he can’t even tolerate the rest of us and doesn’t even pretend to like us. If you have not done so already, please sign the Arkansas minimum wage increase petition. About 10,000 signatures were thrown out, some for frivolous reasons. Petitions are at Dem. headquarters in Jonesboro, Paragould, etc. August 18 is the deadline. We sent 2 delegates to the Arkansas Citizens First Congress Convention in June. A report on the convention was given. Please visit the Arkansas Public Policy Panel and the Citizens First Congress websites and Facebook pages, and get educated, motivated, and activated to make Arkansas better for all. They are great resources to help educate us all on the issues and bills affecting our state—a community meeting on some of these issues will be held in Jonesboro on August 6. More information on that meeting will be posted in the near future.
